HKYWCA advocates the use of innovative products in elderly services

HKYWCA Elderly Services Department showcased various innovative products and the respective applications in elderly services during the Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit. We are glad to get a wonderful reception from the visitors, who were excited in testing the new products, indicating that the general public has started to accept applying technology to elder services.

“Broadening Life” was the theme employed by the Association. We wished to unlock people’s imagination concerning elderly services so as to bring about enhancement. Two well-received products were the multi-functional robot and robotic cat.

Not only is the robot adorable, it can bring joy to the elderly by performing different tasks, e.g. doing exercises and Chinese Kung Fu, dancing, reading Chinese poetries and tales, etc. The robotic cat, with sensors across its body, can interact with human and respond to strokes, hugs etc. It helps to calm people suffering from dementia.

Other products include:

Tabletop projector – allows elderly to interact with games projected on the desktop as a mean of rehabilitation training

Lower limbs exercise equipment – prevents elders with lower limbs problem from contracture and thrombosis
AngeLINK mobile application – enables elders to build electronic “memoir” which can be shared on social media, and to increase their communication with relatives (more information can be found here: https://goo.gl/n4qlPN)

Interactive healthcare website (http://pathvv.ywca.org.hk/wordpress/– provides information that assists people above 50 years old to prepare for their golden age

The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit was organised by the Government, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. Local and overseas products were showcased, to enhance public awareness on gerontechnology development and application. Assertive technology and inclusive design are indispensable for the sustainability of an ageing society. HKYWCA will continue to work on this area, in order to foster an environment in favour of active ageing.
